Grupo Telefonica recognized Vertiv for its infrastructure solution implemented in large Colombia data center, with short ROI and energy savings of up to 40 percent.
Buenos Aires [February 20, 2019] – During the Global Energy and Climate Change Workshop organized by Telefonica, Vertiv received the “Best Energy Efficiency Solution” award, which was given to a project carried out at one of the largest locations in Colombia, the Celta Switch in Funza, near Bogota. Vertiv is a global infrastructure solution provider for telecommunications, data centers and commercial and industrial facilities.
The Vertiv cooling solution is used in a Tier 3 data center, requiring at least n+1 redundancy as well as concurrent maintainability during equipment replacement and maintenance, according to UpTime Institute’s criteria. The cooling system (chiller), which belongs to the Liebert® FB4075 family, has a Supersaver system made up of 12 air handling units and a ring-shaped, chiller maintained simultaneously with an option of indirect free cooling. Free cooling is engaged when the external temperatures at Celta Switch are cooler than the data center. The design allows the compressors to be shut off and reduces energy consumption.
“This design has allowed us to achieve a return on our investment within three years and we are expecting the resulting energy consumption savings to amount to about 40 percent. We feel at ease knowing that we can trust Vertiv’s support, which we know well from their experience in cooling systems,” said David Ramirez de los Reyes, head of energy planning for Telefonica Colombia.
“One of the main benefits is the way that technological transformation promotes efficiency, which translates into energy savings and a positive impact on the environment. Thanks to an optimization in the Liebert® monitoring systems, we reduced consumption from 68 to 41 kWh, which represents a 40 percent reduction in the consumption of the air handling units. Once the chiller is operating and running in free cooling mode, we can take advantage of the low temperatures to achieve the desired savings,” noted Diego Burbano, project manager, Colombia and Ecuador, Vertiv.

“Over the years, Vertiv has been providing maximum uptime and efficiency solutions for Telefonica. We have one of the largest service organizations in the region, as well as geographic coverage in several cities, which allows Vertiv to offer Telefonica high-quality service with the lowest possible response times,” noted Fernando Garcia, vice president and general manager, Latin America, Vertiv.
